The next Tottenham manager
Ryan Mason's appointment until the end of the season gives Tottenham a little breathing space to choose Mourinho's permanent successor.
The 29-year-old could well go on an incredible run with the team over the coming month, but with his lack of experience the likelihood is that this will be a brief but important first developmental step in his coaching career.
Spurs' history of choosing managers has been sketchy at best over the past two decades, with their most successful choices having been back-up options, such as Martin Jol, who stepped up from being assistant manager to Jacques Santini, and Mauricio Pochettino, who took the job after Louis van Gaal turned the club down.
Even Harry Redknapp's appointment came after the original big name appointment, Juande Ramos, was sacked after just a year in charge.
This time the pressure is on the club to get it right during a time when they really cannot afford any costly missteps and need to restore their identity in a positive way in the sport.
This week has been a chaotic one at the club but the search for the next manager of Tottenham Hotspur is expected to really step up in the next fortnight or so.
football.london understands that Spurs' profile for their ideal next manager is one who is progressive, attack-minded, favouring possession-based football and most importantly fits into the club's culture.
Tottenham were using cutting edge techniques in much of what they did in the coaching and physical side of things during Mauricio Pochettino's five-and-a-half years at the club and there is a desire among many within Spurs to get back to that modern form of management.
The age of the club's next manager is not important, but how they see the game is and the names of just some of those football.london understands are currently on Spurs' shortlist reflect that.
Julian Nagelsmann has long been a name on the lips of many at Tottenham with the 33-year-old's progressive work at RB Leipzig impressing many.
The biggest obstacle with the young German is not only the compensation costs of bringing him to the Premier League but also the interest from Bayern Munich, with Hansi Flick's impending departure.
Nagelsmann is likely to be able to play the field somewhat in the weeks ahead as he is coveted by many of Europe's elite.
Brendan Rodgers is another with plenty of fans within the walls of Spurs and his football philosophy and development of young players tick a lot of boxes at the club.
The 48-year-old has played down links to Spurs this week and has a long-term deal at Leicester City, a club that has grown hugely in recent years, but he is someone Tottenham have kept a close eye on for a long time.
Links with former Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri and Atletico Bilbao manager Marcelino are believed to be wide of the mark, while other rumoured candidates such as England boss Gareth Southgate and ex-Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe are not currently expected to be in the frame.
Two other men who have drawn Tottenham's interest though are Ajax boss Erik ten Hag and Brighton manager Graham Potter.
Ten Hag has impressed in Amsterdam, developing a number of young star players while also improving the Dutch side in European competition, not least in the season Spurs pipped them at the post in the Champions League semi-finals in 2019. He is on the brink of winning the Eredivisie title once again this week.
One concern over the 51-year-old would be how engrained he is within the culture at Ajax and its famous structure and how that would translate should he move to the very different confines of another club, especially one in the Premier League.
Potter has earned admiring glances from a number of Premier League clubs with his work at Brighton and the style of the team there is a growing belief that the 45-year-old could step up to a larger club and transfer his methods with little fuss.
There is also Massimiliano Allegri. The 53-year-old former Juventus coach is an attractive proposition to Tottenham, with his list of honours and the fact that unlike the other managers, who would come without a compensation fee.
However, while he is highly rated at Spurs one drawback with the Italian is his grasp of English and whether that would hamper his efforts in transforming a Premier League side. He will also be in demand this summer among many European clubs.
Other potential candidates may arise in the weeks ahead as clubs across Europe make decisions about their futures and cut their cloth accordingly and some leading head coaches could enter the frame as they become disenchanted with their future prospects.
Tottenham need to get this next managerial appointment right and the names of just some of those on their shortlist suggest they are very much looking to the future.
