Главный тренер "Тоттенхэма" Андре Виллаш-Боаш в интервью британской прессе поставил на одну ступень нападающего "шпор" Джермейна Дефо и форварда "Атлетико" Радамеля Фалькао, с которым специалист работал в "Порту".

"Дефо так же ценен, как и Фалькао. У Джермейна невероятное голевое чутьё. Такие форварды очень важны для команды, когда соперник закрывается и вам нужен футболист, чтобы разблокировать игру, забить важный мяч. Работая с Фалькао, мне иногда казалось, что он не сможет замкнуть тот или иной фланговый пас, однако вот он появляется из ниоткуда и забивает. Такое же свойство имеет и Дефо. Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe has revealed he is revelling in life under Andre Villas-Boas and hopes his goals can fire the club to success this season.

The 30-year-old England striker has started all but one of Spurs' 17 Premier League games this campaign, scoring nine times and 13 in all competitions.

His good form has been reflected by the team, who have won four of their last five matches and sit fourth in the table.

Defoe is now hoping the good performances can translate into silverware and UEFA Champions League qualification.

"The new manager has come in and he has shown great faith in me," he said.

"He said to me from the beginning, 'I want you to stay at the club, I know you will score goals'.

"It has been fantastic. I have got my chances, I have scored goals.

"I just want to keep it going, keep scoring more goals and help the team achieve something this year."
Bit-part Adebayor

Defoe's fine form has forced fellow forward Emmanuel Adebayor into a bit-part role at White Hart Lane this year.

But with the Togo international considering travelling to next month's Africa Cup of Nations, Villas-Boas' dependency on his first-choice forward could soon become even greater.

That is good news for Defoe personally, but for the sake of the team, he hopes Adebayor opts to remain with his club.

He said: "Obviously, for us, we want him to stay here and help us to win games.

"At the end of the day, I can't stand here and say he shouldn't go because it is special when you play for your country.

"It is a decision that Ade has to make himself."

Despite being the spearhead of Tottenham's attack this season, Defoe admits that he needs to improve his defensive play after Villas-Boas held a meeting with his squad in a bid to address their susceptibility to conceding late goals.

Spurs have shipped 10 goals in the final 15 minutes of matches this season, a joint-league high along with bottom side Reading.

That inability to keep things tight late on has cost them dearly, so much so that if matches had ended after 80 minutes, Tottenham would be top of the league.

Defoe added: "There is no point standing here telling you what was said in the meeting because I would be standing for a long time.

"But it is not just the defenders - it's the whole team. It's that famous saying: defend from the front.

"It is something that has happened and is something that we don't want to continue to happen."

The England international had said he felt “blessed” at what he thought was his first child

England striker Jermain Defoe is not the father of a baby born to his ex-girlfriend last month, his representatives said today.

The Tottenham forward had a brief relationship with Anne-Marie Moore, who gave birth to a son Joshua-James in February.

However, after a DNA test it has been revealed Defoe is not the father, a spokesman for the player said.

"Following a paternity test, Jermain Defoe has confirmed that he is not the father of the baby born on February 19 2013," said the player's spokesman.

"Jermain vowed to support the mother after she claimed she was expecting his child but DNA test results have proved that the baby is not his.

"He will be making no further comment."

Speaking earlier this month, Defoe said he felt "blessed" by the arrival of Joshua-James and hoped it would inspire him in the same way as Gareth Bale's new child had.

"I have a little boy now, so I want to work hard to be a better person and keep on doing what I'm doing," he said ahead of playing Inter Milan in the Europa League.

"I spend a lot of time with him. I see him every day, feeding him, putting him to sleep, changing nappies. I do everything. It's the first but it has been a great experience.

"It's amazing to be honest. Anyone with kids can understand what I'm saying. It changes your mentality, the way you think. I just feel blessed."

Defoe had seen Bale score 18 goals in 24 games since he became a father in October last year.

"He has 'little AVB', little Alba," Defoe revealed. "He came in the next day with all the pictures and he has loved it, and you can tell by how he's playing. He's a happy person. He has his daughter and that stability is important as a professional. He's buzzing at the minute and I think it helps."
